BIOGRAPHY
Mel Gibson is the sixth in a family of 11 children who, settled in the United States, soon emigrated to Australia, the native land of the mother, Ann. After training at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney, Mel Gibson made his film debut in Summer City (1977), an Australian thriller by Christopher Fraser . At the same time, he performed in the theater, where he demonstrated eclecticism, then in television series such as The Sullivans and Tickled Pink . In 1979, the success of George Miller ‘s

futuristic action film Mad Max brought him worldwide fame. Two sequels followed, titled Mad Max 2 (1981) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). At the same time, his performances as a mentally retarded person in Tim (1979) by Michael Pate and as an unconscious young soldier in Gallipoli (1981) by Peter Weir allowed him to earn his critical stripes, in the form of two Best Actor Awards from the Australian Film Institute (equivalent to the Césars). The actor will return under the direction of Peter Weir in The Year of All Dangers , in 1982. In 1984, Mel Gibson launches an attack on Hollywood with The Bounty by Roger Donaldson and The River by Mark Rydell . But it was his character as a crazy and suicidal cop in Lethal Weapon (1987) by Richard Donner that made him popular in the United States. This saga, developed through three other opus ( Lethal Weapon 2 , 1989; Lethal Weapon 3 , 1992; and Lethal Weapon 4 , 1998), will definitively establish it as a sure value of American action cinema . The actor therefore tries to broaden his repertoire, by multiplying cinematographic genres: the classic tragedy ( Hamlet by Franco Zeffirelli ), the parody western ( Maverick by Richard Donner ) or even the romantic comedy ( What Women Want by Nancy Meyers ), arouse his interest. But Mel Gibson is not just an actor, he is also a recognized director. In 1993, he began directing with The Man Without a Face , a drama in which he played a disfigured and marginal hermit. With this experience, he puts himself on stage in

Braveheart (1995) the evocation of the life of William Wallace, hero and symbol of Scottish independence in the 13th century. This ambitious historical fresco won five Oscars, including those for Best Film and Best Director, as well as the Golden Globe for Best Director.

Founder of Icon Productions , he produced through this company Payback (1998), a remake of Point of No Return by Brian Helgeland , and The Million Dollar Hotel (2000) by Wim Wenders , two films in which he is also the main actor. In 2004, he created a sensation by creating The Passion of the Christ , a historical fresco in Aramaic and Latin dedicated to the last hours of Christ. Three years later, he did it again with Apocalypto , a fresco this time dedicated to the Mayan civilization and shot… in the Mayan language.

As an actor, this lover of great war frescoes stands out as an American independence fighter in The Patriot, the road to freedom by Roland Emmerich and as a lieutenant battling the Viet Cong enemy in We Were Soldiers by Randall Wallace . In 2001, he tried a new register, that of the supernatural thriller , by filming under the direction of M. Night Shyamalan in Signs , a film about the appearance of gigantic circles and strange signs in the fields of Pennsylvania. He then became much rarer on the screens but we still saw him in The Singing Detective, a British mini-series, and in the film Out of Control , in 2010.

After years tormented by his personal problems, Mel Gibson returns to the forefront in Le Complexe du Castor , a film directed by his friend Jodie Foster , presented out of competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Subsequently, the actor plays in the B series Kill the Gringo (2012) and followed up with another Mexican-sounding project which made more noise, Machete Kills (2013) where he played the villainous Luther Voz. The same year, he joined the cast of Expendables 3 – Special Unit – with Sylvester Stallone at the head of operations – in order to play the new villain.

In 2016, Mel Gibson headlined Frenchman Jean-François Richet ‘s new film , Blood Father . The actor plays an ex-convict ready to do anything to protect his daughter who is being pursued by drug traffickers. A few months later and a little less than ten years after Apocalypto, his new production, You Shall Not Kill, is released in theaters . The feature film tells the true story of the first conscientious objector to win the US Congressional Medal of Honor (during World War II, he became a doctor so he wouldn’t have to use a gun).
